Make your own delicious and nutritious nut and seed butters with this flexible template. Perfect for spreading on toast, adding to smoothies, or using in baking, these homemade butters are rich in healthy fats and proteins.

Base Ingredients:

Nuts/Seeds (Choose 1-2, 2-3 cups total):
  • Almonds

  • Peanuts

  • Cashews

  • Walnuts

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Pumpkin seeds

Flavor Enhancers (Optional, Choose 1-2, 1-2 teaspoons each):
  • Sea salt

  • Cinnamon

  • Vanilla extract

  • Cocoa powder

  • Honey or maple syrup

Add-ins (Optional, Choose 1-2, 1-2 tablespoons each):
  • Chia seeds

  • Flaxseeds

  • Coconut flakes

  • Dark chocolate chips

Method of Preparation:

  1. Roast Nuts/Seeds:

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread nuts/seeds on a baking sheet and roast for 10-15 minutes until fragrant, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Let cool slightly.

  2. Blend:

    • Place roasted nuts/seeds in a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. This process may take 5-10 minutes, depending on your equipment. Be patient as the nuts/seeds go through stages: first crumbly, then dough-like, and finally smooth and creamy.

  3. Add Flavor Enhancers:

    • Add chosen flavor enhancers (e.g., sea salt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, honey, or maple syrup) and blend until well combined. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  4. Incorporate Add-ins:

    • If desired, fold in optional add-ins (e.g., chia seeds, flaxseeds, coconut flakes, dark chocolate chips) by hand to maintain texture.

  5. Store:

    • Transfer the nut/seed butter to a clean, airtight jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Nutritional Profile:

  • Nuts/Seeds: Provide healthy fats, protein, and fiber.

  • Flavor Enhancers: Add depth of flavor.

  • Add-ins: Enhance nutritional value with additional vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids.

  • For a smoother consistency, you can add a small amount of neutral oil (e.g., almond oil, peanut oil) during blending.

  • For a sweeter butter, increase the amount of honey or maple syrup, or add a few pitted dates during blending.

  • Ensure nuts/seeds are fully roasted and cooled slightly before blending to achieve the best texture and flavor.

This template allows for endless combinations of nut and seed butters, ensuring you can enjoy a different flavor every time.
